The Development Process

January 22, 2018

Over the last three months, screenwriter Steven Martini and I have been in the development process for the JOHN MACK screenplay. As Steve has been diligently tackling the first draft, we have simultaneously had conference calls/meetings with many of John Mack's former colleagues and friends who have afforded us a very personal and upclose account of events.

It has been a fascinating and incredibly special experience to speak with people such as Harvard psychiatrist and author, Dr. George Vaillant; MIT atomic physicist Dr. David Pritchard and his shaman wife, Andrea Pritchard; Harvard astrophysicist Dr. Rudy Schild; psychiatrist and co-founder of the transpersonal psychology movement Dr. Stanislav Grof; federal civil rights attorney, Daniel Sheehan and his activist wife, Sara Nelson; and the head of McClean Mental Hospital in Boston, Dr. Jeffrey Rediger.  What a privilege it is to have these and so many others - including members of the Mack family - supporting and contributing to the film at this stage.

The first draft of the screenplay is almost done weighing in at a very hefty 216 pages.  But a story as big as this one, merits a big first draft. The next step in the process will be determined by how Steve's first draft reads.

We are very excited to be in this process; we're learning a lot and having lots of fun!

I'll leave you with this quote from Dr. Stan Grof:

"Western Science is approaching a paradigm shift of unprecedented proportions, one that will change our concepts of reality and of human nature, bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern science, and reconcile the differences between Eastern spirituality and Western pragmatism."
